Dancers and their Muscles – Post #1

Maleah P -

Hi, I’m Maleah. As a dancer, I wanted to know whether different styles of dance cause more strain on different muscles. I’ve been a dancer since I was three and over the last fourteen years I have learned many styles of dance including Jazz, Ballet, Musical Theater, Tap, and Lyrical. I have chosen to investigate the various muscles different dance styles use and whether there are differences between these styles., I am going to be observing different dance classes at my own dance studio and recording what kind of exercises and stretches they do. By looking at these different movements, I will then be taking note of which muscles are used more often in each. After collecting this data, I will also be surveying the different dance teachers and whether they think certain muscles are more important to their dance style. Based on my observations and the survey, I am going to compare which muscles seemed to be used more often in each style and whether this differs between the many styles of dance. Specifically, I will be getting data on Musical Theater, Hip-Hop, Tap, Jazz, Lyrical or Modern, and Ballet. I hypothesize that the Tap and Ballet styles will use more of the lower leg and foot muscles while Hip-Hop, Jazz, and Musical Theater use more of the core and upper leg strength muscles. Knowing which muscles certain forms of dance use could be helpful in the dancers’ training. If a dancer is going to use more of a specific muscle, they can take the time to warm that muscle up before each time they dance. The dancers can also make sure they take care of the other muscles they don’t work as much to keep a balanced, healthy body.

Hello Maleah. This is a very passionate project! Would more exhausting styles of dance with a lot more footwork and handwork like hip-hop involve more of an overall muscle stress with the strain extending to more than just the muscles around their feet?
