Concluding Post

Saanvi Y -

I am writing my final blog the night before my presentation for the AP. I was so caught up with trying to fix my oral defense that I never saw how late it had gotten. This study is like my baby, and I feel like both I and my knowledge have grown.

While trying at times, I have learned to be flexible and adapt quickly. With real data and tight timelines, I have to be on my toes.

Being in the classroom as an observer and not as a student has opened my eyes to a whole new reality. As a sixth grader, I may have had no real understanding of what it took to be a teacher. I had a very limited understanding of the stress and effort teachers gave. Sitting as an observer, however, I was given the opportunity to take a closer look at the behaviour of the students. I was able to see how frustrating a career in teaching is, and gained a whole new level of respect for teachers who show up every day cheerfully (especially the ones who teach the 6th graders…).

My research focused mainly on helping the teachers. While it may not be extra help and vacation teachers deserve, I hope the results of my experiment can decrease any additional burden teachers may have.

I would like to thank Mr. Bates, who was my external advisor at the time and helped me gain a closer look at the lives of sixth graders. I would also like to thank Ms. Ainslie who encouraged me and questioned me to craft a better and stronger study. I would also like to thank my close friends who listened to me as I complained about how difficult it was to do the statistical tests in a short time frame.

If anyone is interested in attending my presentation on the impact gender integrated seating arrangements have on the performance and behaviour of sixth graders, please be sure to attend on May 12th at 6:30 pm.
