(12) The End
Riya D -
Well, it’s finally the end! The last week of the spring semester at GCC just came to a close.
Over the course of these past two semesters, I was able to learn a lot and conduct some successful research projects … the D. xinjiangensis Middle Media Project, TGY Dilutions, TGY Isolated Components, a growth curve of R2 vs TGY. But, hey, let’s not forget the unfortunate Pigmentation Project with that mystery bacteria 🙁
From everything these last two semesters, I was able to make three main conclusions …
- In the short-term (within 5 hours post-inoculation), D. xinjiangensis grown in TGY and R2 have near identical growth rates.
- D. xinjiangensis exposed to UV in TGY has higher cell survival than equivalent inoculates exposed in R2.
- TGY’s correlation with higher cell survival is attributable to its yeast component.
With all of these findings, I was also able to create a poster which attended two local conferences, ANAS and ASM.
A special thank you goes out to Charlotte Hagerman for initially inspiring my research efforts and James Tuohy for providing the opportunity, tools, and knowledge to complete this project. I also appreciate the contributions of fellow lab members Violette Soto, Evan Russell, Rejul Guru, and so many more who have made this project possible!
To fully wrap up this project, I would like to invite all of you to my presentation on Thursday, May 15th at BASIS Peoria High School Rm. 208 at 2 pm! I can’t wait to see you all there and tell you about everything I’ve learned thus far!
