Project Title: Effect of tablets in middle schools science classes BASIS Advisor: Ms. Ainslie Internship Location: BASIS Peoria Onsite Mentor: Leslee Briggs |
Project Abstract
Technology, ranging from a tablet to a smartphone, has evolved over the past decades and even in recent years. Consequently, the classroom feels the indirect and direct impacts of students over-utilizing their technology. The effects of technology overuse must be studied to create ways for students to learn efficiently. Rather than using technology in ways that harm students, for example, using AI to complete assignments and essays, further research on technology can be done to shed light on ways through which it can be implemented in classrooms. One of the many ways of technology implementation for teachers in their classrooms is by handing out materials, lectures, and interactive activities to their students to keep them attentive. However, issues arise on both the teacher’s and student’s ends. Teachers often receive insufficient training to properly integrate technology into their curriculum, while students frequently misuse technology, being seen as a prevalent issue in classrooms across America. As a result, my experiment focuses on studying the effects of technology on middle school science students. The reason I picked middle school science students relies on the fact that elementary school students rarely use tablets, and middle school is a crucial time for students to develop their critical thinking skills and application. Of course, such topics have been studied heavily, so I decided to shift my focus to science classes as literature glosses over this niche subtopic. Data gathered from my research will highlight what distractors play a big role in classrooms and how technology ties in with them to reduce student attention in class.
Questionnaire results – Blog Post #10 D.S.
Hello everyone, I hope you are doing well today. Today I will share the rest of my results that I received from my questionnaire. The rest of my questionnaire consists of the question where teachers must rank each distractor. Out of 19 responses from various middle school science teachers from the same chain of middle... Finalizing my project – Blog Post #12 D.S.
Hello everyone! Today I will be finalizing my project and sharing some last details with you. After finishing my research project it was clear that technology did not have a grave impact on middle school students in science classes. Conversations between students turned out to be the greatest negative distractor in the classroom and this... Read More
Project findings continued – Blog Post #11 D.S.
Hello everyone, today I will be telling you about some of my findings from my project. First, I would like to share what I discovered about my hypotheses. The results from my questionnaire showed that my H1 was mostly incorrect, and H2 was correct. My first hypothesis was that Tablets/Technology have a higher negative... Read More
Discussing results – Blog Post #9 D.S.
Hello, everyone. I hope you are doing well today. In this blog post, I would like to discuss the implications of the rankings section of my questionnaire. By discussing these results, we can understand teachers’ feelings about the distractors that they chose and how much each of these distractors is seen in every class. ... Read More
Data Synthesis – Blog Post #8 D.S.
Hello everyone, this week I have been working on synthesizing data from my Google Forms questionnaire. There have been trends that I did not expect to have in this experiment since I started. Today, I will begin giving some insight into my results for my experiment and what results I was able to gather from... Read More
Life lessons learned through my experiment – Blog Post #7 D.S.
What are some of the “life lessons” you have gained from working in the real world? One life lesson I have gained while working on my project for researching technology and other distractions in the classroom is that not everything will go how you want it to go. Especially in science, when experimenting, you... Read More
Recent developments – Blog post #6 D.S.
What are your most recent developments? Some of the recent developments of my project have to do with the results I received from the questionnaire. Firstly, many of the responses I received from the teachers did not focus on the distraction of technology and tablets in the classroom. As a result, I need... Read More
Blog Post #5 – Saving yourself trouble D.S.
What advice would you give to BASIS juniors about choosing their senior projects, based on your own experiences? Some advice I would give to a BASIS junior would be that they need to focus on their project and get it done right from the very beginning. If you plan poorly from the beginning and... Read More
Answering my question – Blog Post #4 D.S.
How are you progressing in answering your initial question? Since I started my project I have revised my question a few times. It changed from the 1:1 tablet system which replaces the physical notes in the classroom with tablets. This also changes the need for a teacher because the teacher can simply push out... Read More
Blog Post #3 – Procedure D.S.
What has challenged your thinking? What has challenged my thinking is receiving results that may be incorrect from the teachers. When I began this questionnaire and sent it out to the teachers, I had first designed the Likert scale a bit backwards with 10 being the least important distractor in the classroom and 1... Read More
Blog Post #2 – Project overview D.S.
How would you revise your Senior Project if you could start over? One way I would revise my Senior Project if I could start over would most likely be to choose another form of data collection. While it was difficult to pick what form of data collection I wanted to perform at the beginning of... Read More
Blog post #1 – Technology in Middle School Science Classes D.S.
My name is David Stefan, and I am researching the impacts of tablet technology and computers on student attention in middle school science classes. For my research, I have created a questionnaire with questions for teachers regarding different distractions in their classroom that they may or may not notice taking away from the attention span...
