Week 8: Sketching Designs
Hi and welcome to week 8 of my blog!
This week I spent most of my time coming up with sketches and inspiration. I decided to design a creature that would end up as one of the main characters the player can play as in combat.
The first step to gathering inspiration is coming up with a central theme to your design. In this example, I decided to use the motif of time and owls as my main inspiration. Starting off of this, I’m able to make sketches based on reference images online of pictures of owls and symbols of time.
However, this isn’t quite interesting enough for a design. I wanted to add a distinct twist to the design, so instead of owls, I took inspiration from the designs of owlbears and sugar gliders. Combining these elements allowed me to create a unique design that hasn’t been done before.
I also need to decide what aspects of the design I want to focus on, so I decided that I wanted to create a cute creature. This means that I have to emphasize features such as large eyes, a generally larger head-to-body ratio, and a generally chubby silhouette to make it easily recognizable. Example designs I looked at that carry these principles well are Grogu and Pikachu, with their instantly recognizable designs.
With that being said, below is the finished sketch sheet that I made based on my ideas.

Next week I’ll be focusing on creating a 3D mockup of this design!
