Project Title: Fading Moments: The Progressive Battle Against Alzheimer's BASIS Advisor: Tommaso Cioni Internship Location: University of Arizona Onsite Mentor: Dr. Paulo Pires, Assistant Professor of Physiology |
Project Abstract
Alzheimer’s is a disease that affects around 55 million people worldwide and, as data suggests, the most common neurodegenerative -rapid degradation of brain tissue and the associated functions- disease. Recent estimates point to approximately 10% of senior citizens (65+) having the disease, with the number increasing substantially by age with about 50% of individuals over 85 affected. With such drastic numbers, it is shocking that there is no readily available cure, only preliminary care is available. However, with the use of a new field of study known as glymphatics (the study of the lymphatic system in the brain), there is a possible solution because we can use it to isolate potentially problematic proteins in the brain. These proteins could help with finding new venues to combat Alzheimer’s disease. With the help of Dr. Paulo Pires, an esteemed researcher at the University of Arizona, I will use data mining techniques to find out which proteins in the brain could be responsible for diseases like Alzheimer’s. I will do this using mass spectrometry analysis, an analytical chemistry technique to isolate proteins based on weight. With the data I find, I can deduce whether the proteins I have isolated are potentially risk factors and could lead to a decline in brain function. Doing so could help pharmaceutical companies to develop drugs specifically tailored to act on those proteins. If the drugs prove to be medical grade, they could remedy ailments seen in millions of affected individuals worldwide and decrease the prevalence of Alzheimer’s Disease.
Week 10: Walk Down Memory Lane
Hey everyone! I hope you are all well! This is my final blog, so I would like to give a timeline of all I have learned during this project. The first week was a bit rough because I walked in on my first day and learned that my original plan had been scrapped in the... Read More
Week 9: Final Analyses
Hey everyone! I hope you are all doing well! I focused on finding more proteins this week, but there was a twist. I was to find the proteins that the genes I found last week code for. I asked my mentor why we were finding more proteins instead of focusing on just a few, and... Read More
Week 8: So Many Softwares!
Hey everyone, I hope you are all doing well! This week, I have been working primarily on analyzing the different mass spectrometry techniques. I finished making my PowerPoint, so my mentor decided that the best way for me to learn which mass spectrometry we were using was to make me go in blind and figure... Read More
Week 7: What is Proteomics?
Hey all! Welcome back to my blog! This week, I began by isolating more proteins. By the end of the week, I had 15 protein candidates that my mentor approved of. He brought up a concept called proteomics, which was foreign to me. Honestly, after so many biology courses, I was accustomed to being able... Read More
Week 6: Phase 1: Isolation of Proteins
Hi all, I hope you are well! This week was very busy. My mentor told me that due to some kinks in the lab schedule because of a couple of breakthroughs, I should find more than 5 proteins that I find important. I want to take this week to share the proteins that I have... Read More
Week 5: 5,000 Proteins?
Hi everyone this is week 5 of my senior project! This week, I finally finished my research! On Monday, I officially began working on my project! I was given an Excel sheet with around five thousand individual proteins, a description of what they are, what makes them work, what makes them not work, etc. At... Read More
Week 4: Two Weeks on One Paper?
Hey all! This week was very taxing on me. The paper from last week was super dense and I thought I understood it very well. I did not understand it nearly as well as I should have. The lab assistant and I discussed the paper, and I knew all the obscure minutia but not the... Read More
Week 3: Continued Research
Hi everyone! This week was hectic. I had to read my hardest paper yet. The main point of the paper was to introduce the brain's defense system: the glymphatic system. It took me about a week to read this paper, but I was still very stumped as to what the paper was about. It was... Read More
Week 2 : Establishing a Link
Hi everyone! Currently, my schedule is comprised of reading academic papers to learn about the topic of my project. These papers are rigorous and dense in content, so it usually takes me a few days to read them. I started this week with a discussion of the first paper from last week, and... Read More
Week 1 : Working past some issues
Hi everyone, I am AK! This is my blog post for the first week: Currently, I am doing my project on Alzheimer's disease at the University of Arizona Pires Lab. The commonly accepted theory is that the disease is caused by protein buildup in the brain. This buildup prevents functioning and restricts thinking, leading to... Read More
