Week 1: Jump Starting my Mustang Restoration: The Automotive Journey Begins

Adam D -

Over the past decade, I have been ingrained in car culture, from helping my dad fix his project cars to going to car shows or repairing heavy equipment I have been surrounded by the automotive world for as long as I can remember. However, while I have been deeply ingrained within the automotive community, I have never attempted to fix a car completely from start to finish. Therefore I am happy to announce that this blog series will be a ride-along with my experiences in fixing an old 1969 Mustang that I was lucky enough to purchase.

In the coming weeks, I will be tackling the many major issues that are present within a car that is over 50 years old. From diagnosing the problems to adding modern features to an old car, I intend to repair everything required to make this car both road-legal and comfortable to drive, while also improving upon my automotive knowledge.

While I have more experience than the average person when it comes to car knowledge and repair, I hope to enlighten anyone who wishes to learn more about how they can fix their car problems should they arise. Whether you simply have a passing interest in cars or truly want to know more, I intend to tackle and walk through the problems that you might face in your own car

someday. However, if automotive mechanics isn’t your cup of tea, then I still want you to enjoy your time reading these blog posts and use them as in any way you can, whether that be giving you insight to your own problems or to simply read when you’re bored I intend to make the following blogs both educational and entertaining.

The next blog post will be the first where I actually begin working on the car and that begins with bodywork. I will have to make the weathered and rusted exterior shine once more, and I will be going over the basic components necessary for completing a task such as this one.

Once again, thank you for taking time to read this blog and I can’t wait to share more.

Wow, the car looks really beat up. Aside from the bodywork, are the interior components just as damaged right now? And will the final product be certified for road use?

Kind of, as it is over 50 years old parts like the seat upholstery are almost completely gone, but the frame for those seats are still mostly intact meaning they just need to be relined with foam and be reupholstered, and if everything goes to plan then yes I will take it to get emissions and make sure it is road certified.

This project looks very fun. I can't wait to see it finished. What made you decide to purchase the 1969 Ford Mustang?

Fixing a car of that age is certainly no easy task! I already know some elements of basic car repair but am excited to learn more about the repair and rebuilding process!

When I went looking for cars I knew I wanted a old muscle car, but I also needed something within a reasonable price range and I decided on the Mustang. I decided on the 1969 model variant as they are often considered one of the best years for mustangs and muscle cars as a whole.

I hope that I can help you learn more along the way.
