Tarsals and Metatarsals: Introduction to Forensic Anthropology

Nico l -

Hello everybody, my name is Nico and welcome back to another senior project blog post. Today I am going to be filling you in on what is to come and what I have already done. To start, I’ll explain my title and that first sentence. I am going to title all my posts after human bones, starting from the feet, which is today’s, all the way to the head. The introduction is also a little reference and a sneak-peak at what is to come, as it directly emulates famous YouTuber Markiplier, of whom I consider one of the best and one of my favorites, and I will link his channel below. For the project side of things, this past week my advisor was at the American Board of Forensic Anthropology meeting, so I did not do anything other than read up on her works and her students works, of which some were very interesting, like a body farm that utilizes pigs to see what would happen if someone died out in the desert outside of Phoenix. This coming week I hope to establish my times and work schedule and get started on lab work, as I would like to be part of something like that body farm.

What's up Nico? It's great that you are about to start doing actual work in a lab, but something was on my mind. You mention that you enjoy the Youtuber Markiplier, but what other creators do you want to emulate, and is there any specific part of their content that you want to follow? For example, is there a Youtuber whose intros you like, or a style of cinematography that you want to mirror?

Hey Nico! I really admire your creativity in this blog post. I do have a question though. Why did you choose to title your blog posts after all the bones in the human body? I know you're doing forensic anthropology, and that probably had a role in this choice, but was there anything else that influenced this?

Your themed titles add a unique touch to the blog posts for your senior project! What aspect of forensic anthropology are you most excited to explore in the lab?

Hello Nico! I love the attention to detail when describing the things you've read. Other than her work about body farms, was there any other work of hers or other one that you've read that stood out to you? It could be because it was interesting, confusing, or straight up absurd! Anticipating what is to come!

Joaquin, I would like to emulate other YouTubers such as the energy of DanTDM, and sort of the same style as The Operations Room. I want to make my own unique intro but I am using inspiration from the channels I used to watch or watch currently

Sidd, it was both a choice of subject matter but also of wanting to have a unique titling convention.

Vinesh, I am looking forward the most to working with an actual cadaver of some kind, as that was my original driving force behind the project.

MJ, the one that stood out to me most was The Sonoran Desert Decomposition project, which sought to utilize pigs dressed in human clothes to simulate what people who have died crossing the Sonoran desert may appear as after sitting in the sun. The whole point of the lab was to see if the PMI (post mortem interval) that is used in most forensic situations is still viable in the extreme heat of the Sonoran desert. The study concluded that the environment of the desert actually mummified most of the corpses, rendering the PMI not very helpful to estimate time of death.
