It Was A Gut Feeling

Jacob p -

Welcome back, bacteria boosters! I’ll be the first person to admit that this hasn’t been the most productive week for me. This week, I really procrastinated on getting Tabletop Creator Pro, so I started card design later than I would have liked. Now let me explain the title: Your gut and mind are closely linked because of bacterial responses to your diet. These responses are transmitted to your brain via the vagus nerve. This is my excuse for my procrastination: a bad bacterial response.

I still managed to get quite a bit done and learned more about using the software despite the late start. Thanks to my site placement, I already had some experience with Tabletop Creator Pro and designing the first card type was relatively easy.

Unfortunately, Rocky was attending a convention this week about card game design and game stores, so I wasn’t at my site placement this week. I would have loved to go but it would have cost a significant amount. Additionally without my site placement, I didn’t get any major inspirations for new cards or mechanics. Attached are some screenshots of what my designs are looking like so far (I know they look bad now, but they’ll look better with art and individual text).

Anyways, I hope to see you all before you can finish pronouncing Myxococcus llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogochensis.

Jacob, I love that you're being true to yourself and admitting that it wasn't a great week for you, because I can relate haha. Now that you mentioned that bacteria at the end, I'm curious— are you going to add Myxococcus llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogochensis to your game? If so, do you have any design in mind for it? Great work for your Vibrio cholerae (pretend this is italicized) by the way!

Hello Jacob! As soon as I got to this, I had to double check that Myxococcus llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogochensis was in fact a real species of bacteria. Speaking of interesting bacteria species, I don't know if anyone has asked you this, but since you are creating a bunch of these cards, what is your favorite bacteria species? If so, any particular reason why?

I appreciate the support, Ashwyn. Unfortunately, I will not be adding Myxococcus llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogochensis to the initial run of the game because it doesn't have many characteristics that show off the core mechanics of the game. I mainly have that bacteria on my document for gags or if I ever just need a bacteria for my game.

Hello Rohit! There was actually a lot of controversy in the scientific community when Myxococcus llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogochensis was named because it has such a long scientific name. Many believed that there should be a limit on the size of scientific names and protested the name, but in the end the name stayed because it was already published in a journal. About your question, Vibrio Cholerae is by far my favorite bacteria. There are a lot of reasons for this but the most important one for me is that it kills other bacteria to obtain favorable genes for the environment. This is a major reason why V. Cholerae is found in so many different environments across the earth.

Hi Jacob! I love getting a glimpse into the early stages of your designs, it’s always fascinating to see how ideas evolve over time. As a fellow bacteria hater, I have to admit it’s impressive how you’ve managed to make them sound cool. The way you're blending your interests into this project is seriously impressive. Are you letting the card game designs to develop itself as you go, or do you have a specific direction/ idea for the designs?

I'm so excited that I'm making bacteria sound cool for you, Dina. For card design, I think I'm mostly set on the bacteria card design (I'll show more in my next post), but I am going to let the gene cards and environment tiles sit until I come up with a brilliant idea (especially for the gene cards).
