Project Title: I Saw the Yeti!!: How the Top 1% Lives on the Tallest Mountains in the World.” BASIS Advisor: Adam Engle Internship Location: Green Valley Nepal Trekking Onsite Mentor: Rajendra Lamichhane |
Project Abstract
Following the historic ascent of Mount Everest by Tenzing Norgay and Edmund Hillary in 1953, tourism to Nepal, specifically Everest, exploded. The idea of standing at the top of the world captivated adventurers, and with documented proof that the summit could be their reality, too, mountaineers began preparing for their own expeditions. This surge in interest led to the rapid growth of tourism organizations, which profited immensely from global fascination with Everest. As equipment improved and Sherpas became more trusted and experienced guides, more climbers signed up for the once-in-a-lifetime experience. While many people share stories about reaching the summit, few talk about the conversations and connections they make with the local villagers along the way. For my Senior Project, I will be documenting my journey to Mount Everest Base Camp, recording my experiences and interactions with the people who call this extreme environment home. I will also delve into the history of Everest expeditions to better understand how this notorious climb became what it is today. Follow my vlog as I uncover the untold stories of Everest.

Welcome back, readers, to my final blog post! This past week, I’ve been working on my slideshow for this project, and it’s been going well. There’s not much to update about, because, quite frankly, I haven’t been doing too much. Thank you guys so much for staying interested in this very erratic project, and although... Read More

A Sherpa’s Legacy
Welcome back once again, readers! This time, I’ll finally be talking more about my EBC trek, how interviewing the guide and porter went (spoiler alert: not very well), and more! After a good night's sleep in Ramechhap, we headed out at 6:00 in the morning, without breakfast, to go to the airport. Our flight was... Read More
Oooooo I’m Blinded by the Smoke..?
Welcome back, readers! In this post, I’ll discuss the final Bratabandha preparations, the day itself, and the after-party that followed. The night before my Bratabandha, we had one final small puja before the long one on ceremony day. This puja was unlike the others, because I was finally at the center of the rituals! During... Welcome back, readers, to my first blog post in four weeks!.. I can’t say that I’m proud of it, but it truly has been a struggle to get a decent internet connection from the other side of the planet, and I won’t lie that since I’ve come back to Arizona I’ve been hit hard by... Read More
The Long-Awaited Day: Possible Delays, Flight Numbers, Film Camera, and More!
Hello, readers! This post is a little different from my usual Monday updates, but I’m finally flying to Nepal tonight! My journey will take over 24 hours, with multiple flights, layovers, and plenty of waiting, so I can’t guarantee I’ll be able to publish another blog post tomorrow. Another thing is that since my mobile... Read More
T-Minus 6 Days: The Grand Adventure Approaches!
Are you an uphill or downhill person? I’ve always preferred going downhill, it’s just more fun! There’s something exhilarating about jumping down from big rocks while descending. Going uphill, on the other hand, requires more strength and perseverance, whereas descending challenges your joint stability and balance. I feel like most people enjoy going downhill more,... Rock by Rock
Is this really a good idea? Is this even the right trail? Welcome back to my blog, this past week I climbed Picketpost, one of the five (in my opinion) main trials in the valley alongside Four Peaks, Flatiron, Camelback, and Picacho Peak and I asked myself these questions many times. In comparison to last... Read More
A Linguist’s Paradise
Welcome back, readers. I’m sure you guys are curious about how my hike to Flatiron went and let me say that it honestly wasn’t so bad! We were a group of 6 people so we went a little bit slower than if we had fewer people, but it took us around 6 hours roundtrip, which... Read More
