Project Title: Elevated Heart Rate or Heart Rate at Elevation? A Study on the Effects of Elevation on the Heart Health of BASIS Flagstaff’s Physically Active Teachers.
BASIS Advisor: Jacyln Titone
Internship Location: BASIS Flagstaff Track Team
Onsite Mentor: Peyton Kohnke, Athletic Director, Track Coach, and Dean

Project Abstract

Cardiovascular Disease (CVD) has been the leading cause of death worldwide for the past twenty years. Two major predictors of CVD are a person’s resting heart rate and VO2 max, the maximum rate of oxygen a person can use while exercising. Consistent physical activity can improve these variables. However, elevation has a negative effect on them. According to the American Heart Association, healthy people won’t need to worry about “moderate elevations” of 6,560 to 9,840 feet, but this wide range may have varying health effects. I aim to better understand how Flagstaff’s elevation of 7,000 feet affects physically active inhabitants by using BASIS teachers as a sample population. I will use the data collected from their fitness watches to understand their personal fitness concerning their unique workouts and how the elevation likely affects them. This method allows me access to a vast amount of data without putting these volunteers through any physical exertion they wouldn’t normally do. With this data, I will better understand the effects of different types of physical fitness on health and avoid CVD at elevations around 7,000 feet.

  • Conclusion: The End … Or …

Hey Everyone! This will be my last blog post. I enjoyed my Senior Project experience. I am especially thankful for being part of AP Research and having fun in class with other students working on their projects. I want to thank Ms. Titone for being the AP Research teacher and for owning an iPhone, which... Read More

  • Week 10: Results and Finishing My Project

Hey Everyone! I have finally finished analyzing all of my data. Sorry about the late post, I was busy writing out my research paper for AP Research. So, I have finished studying the data by comparing it to the population while considering and not considering the effects of elevation. This retains a tiny amount of... Read More

  • Week 9: Data Graphs and Analysis

Hey Everyone! I have now graphed all my available data. I have data from six volunteers, with three of the volunteers having a very large amount of data. Here I will show some of these graphs, my analysis, and conclusions. All of these graphs are from one person's data. Each data point represents the average... Read More

  • Week 8: Data Graphing and More Updates

Hey Everyone! I have started graphing all my data, and I will share an update on my 'Equation.' All of my data is in an Excel Spreadsheet. Excel does have a way to graph data, but the system has flaws. As I stated before, I am analyzing many different variables that the Apple Health app... Read More

  • Week 7: Data Processing and A Final Goal of My Project

Hey Everyone! This post will explain how I plan to analyze the collected data. After finally reviewing the data, I realized it isn't easy to notice significant health improvements over six months. Additionally, each person has different types and amounts of data for me to analyze. Nonetheless, I still have access to a likely sufficient... Read More

  • Week 6: Data Collection

Hey everyone! I'm finally back on track with my posts. I am starting the process of collecting the data for my project. As a review of my data collecting, I am getting data shared through the Apple Health App. I am working with Ms. Titone, who owns an iPhone, to get all the data into... Read More

  • “Week 5”: Expensive Machinery

Hey Everyone! Here is the special post I alluded to, but in what case would I have known that it would be special ahead of time, and what is it about? This is an image of a 2008 Varian 21iX Linear Accelerator. This machine can accelerate electrons to near the speed of light to create... Read More

  • “Week 4”: Explaining (probably) All Project Variables and Terminology

Hey everyone! Next week, I hope to post twice because something very cool will happen in my internship on Friday unless something gets in the way. I want to keep what it is a secret for the next post. So look forward to it! In this one, I'll explain all the variables my project will... Read More

  • “Week 3” (Spring Break): Machinery, Maintenance, and Monitoring

Hey Everyone! Welcome to my post, which is definitely being posted during the Spring Break. Just ignore the post date. But now, seriously, I had spent my Spring Break in Mexico, and right when we were coming back, the I-17 was closed down, forcing us to sleep in the car and take a different path... Read More

  • Week 2: Starting the Internship

Hey Everyone! I have started my internship at the hospital. It takes place on Thursdays and Fridays, so it would take a week for me to tell you all about it unless it is through comments. I am specifically interning at the BioMed Shop. Our main job is to repair and inspect the hospital's equipment.... Read More

  • Week 1: Some Changes and Clarification

I have read the previous comments, and I'm thankful for all of your interest in my topic. However, through these comments, I have chosen to clarify more about my project and recent changes. Firstly, My Internship. I recently have been accepted for an internship at Flagstaff Medical Center in the BioMed Shop. I will help... Read More

Hi everyone! My name is Eugene J, and I'm a senior at BASIS Flagstaff doing a Senior Project. For my project, I will be analyzing how elevation and different types of workouts impact the heart health of adults. I have always been interested in health and biology, so when I was given the opportunity to... Read More
