Project Title: Bee-yond Antibiotics: The Potential of Plant Essential Oils in Combating Honey Bee Disease BASIS Advisor: Dr. Travis May Internship Location: USDA Carl Hayden Bee Research Center Onsite Mentor: Mr. Brendon Mott |
Project Abstract
Honey bees are essential pollinators, supporting both biodiversity and agricultural productivity. However, honey bee populations are under threat due to numerous factors, such as habit loss, exposure to pesticides, and disease. Bee diseases such as European Foul Brood (EFB) and American Foul Brood (AFB) have become increasingly difficult to address due to the resistance of disease-causing microbes to antibiotics, which are frequently misused and overused. This study aims to identify plant essential oils that effectively inhibit pathogenic bacteria without negatively affecting essential bacteria that are critical to hive and gut health. Many plant essential oils (phytochemicals) have been shown to have varying levels of effectiveness against honey bee pathogens, but this study will also take into consideration their effects on bacteria that are essential to the hive and gut. Determining the efficacy of such natural antimicrobial substances is vital, as they could serve as alternatives to overused antibiotics in honey bee agriculture such as Oxytetracycline, and help improve honey bee health and agricultural productivity in the long run. However, it is also crucial to evaluate their impact on the broader microbiome of the beehive and gut to ensure that essential bacteria — and therefore the overall health of the hive and gut — are not harmed.
Week 10: Bee-lieve it or not!
Hello everyone and welcome to my final blog! This weekend was the final presentation for my project. It was so exciting to share my project and findings with my peers, and hear about everyone else's projects too! As my project comes to an end, I want to share a fascinating theory that has shaped my... Read More
Week 9: Bacterial Bonanza
Hello everyone, I can't believe it's already Week 9! As I write my paper and discuss in depth the bacteria I studied, this week, I'd also like to share that information here. Again, my study aimed to identify the effects of essential oils on pathogenic bacteria, as well as symbiotic bacteria found in the hive... Read More
Week 8: The Importance of Bee-ing Flexible
Welcome back everyone! Week 8 of my project has been the same as the past few weeks -- as deadlines approach, I have been slowly but surely making progress on my research paper and presentation. Instead of diving into the intricacies of font sizes and slide layouts though, I want to talk today about how... Read More
Week 7: Making a Beeline Towards Deadlines
Welcome to Week 7 of my project! With deadlines for project presentation rehearsals and research paper submissions quickly approaching, I am scrambling to get my research paper and presentation together. It has been a busy past few months, with spending a month in Tucson during my internship and then a month in India. Now that... Read More
Week 6: Buzzing to Conclusions
Hello everyone, welcome to Week 6! As I mentioned in my last blog post, I found an intriguing connection between the results of my experiment and the lab’s past work. Specifically, during a set of experiments similar to my own last year, the lab had tested the inhibitory effects of propolis against a variety of... Read More
Week 5: Hive Got Some Results for You!
**This blog update will discuss my experiences during the fifth week of my project (March 3 to March 7)** Hello, and welcome to Week 5! This week's blog post primarily aims to present the results from my experiments and share some noteworthy initial observations and trends that stood out at first glance. Beyond scribbled notes... **To stay consistent with my peers, this blog update will discuss my experiences during the second week of my internship (February 10 to February 14)** Welcome back to Week 2 of my project! We were busy as bees at the lab this week! After looking at the inhibition plates we’d left in the incubator over... Read More
Week 1: Developing and Troubleshooting a Standard Operating Procedure
**To stay consistent with my peers, this blog update will discuss my experiences during the first week of my internship (February 3 to February 7)** Beekeepers face significant challenges in managing bacterial diseases in their hives, often resorting to antibiotics, which, if over-used, can lead to bacterial resistance. Exploring natural, alternative treatments can help beekeepers... Read More
