Week 0: GRWM – Get Ready With Me!
Hi everyone! My name is Seunghyun—get ready with me for my Senior Project!
My senior project is on social media usage and its effects on self-esteem. In this digital age, nearly 1.5 billion monthly users were on just TikTok itself in 2023 (Mansoor, 2024). Thus, social media is insanely prevalent in people’s lives today. It also holds a lot of information in just one platform itself, allowing users to access a broad spectrum of a variety of data and news.
In my project, I’ll specifically be looking at three different factors—the age that one first begins using social media, the daily screen time, and what type of content one seeks out on social media—to find how all of these factors play together to affect the self-esteem of users.
I decided on this topic since I, a social media user myself, have witnessed several instances where my peers or other users online were affected by insecurities caused by social media. I also noticed that social media’s different algorithms had an array of different users, thus making me think that different types of content, as well as how often someone used social media or their phones everyday, affect people’s self-esteem in different ways.
For my project, I am working with Dr. Katie Brazaitis at Mountain View Mental Health, located in Tucson. I will be collecting data from surveys (that you and other BASIS Ahwatukee students can fill out with parental/guardian consent!) and analyzing them with Dr. B and working my way to the AP Research final deadline. I’m super excited to begin this project, and I’m even more excited to be able to bring you all along on this journey!
