Project Title: Beauty is the Beast: Social Media's Effects on Self-Esteem BASIS Advisor: Matt Winter Internship Location: Mountain View Mental Health Onsite Mentor: Dr. Katie Brazaitis |
Project Abstract
A leading cause of adolescent depression stems from an unhealthy family environment, thus causing adolescents to have self-esteem issues from having an insecure childhood. Social media only amplifies this, as its evolution has led to over 53% of the global population using social media in 2021 (De La Garza et al., 2021). As children are being introduced to the vast field of information on various social media platforms at an increasingly younger age, social media plays an inherent threat to their self-image and their views on life, especially when their screen time usage is unmonitored by a parent or guardian. I will be studying this matter with my Expert Advisor, Dr. Katherine Brazaitis, as I carry out my project to find ways that adolescents are affected by mental illnesses such as anxiety or depression, both effects that stem from self-esteem issues. Through a short survey, I will study the subject’s media screen time, coupled with the types of content one views on social media and the age they began using social media to find the effects on their self-esteem. I will be conducting this survey at BASIS Ahwatukee and getting my results from students using proper guidelines. Through this project, I hope to be able to find the types of content that cause the most amount of self-esteem issues so that those types of content can be more heavily monitored by parents or guardians.
Week 11: Final Part(!!!!)
Hi everyone! Wow, I can’t believe that this post marks the end of my senior project blogs. Having once been a freshman commenting on seniors’ blog posts like many of you currently are, or seeing seniors last year beginning their senior projects by the end of January, and now being a senior myself, finally wrapping... Week 10: GURWM – Get Un-Ready With Me
Welcome back everyone! Unlike what the title says, I am actually doing more than ever to get ready for my final presentations for both AP Research and Senior Projects—I just wanted to title this blog similarly to how I titled my first ever blog post! This week I have focused on making final changes to... Read More
Week 9: Reflection of My Project
Welcome back everyone! Can you believe that our Senior Projects are almost coming to an end? It feels like just last week when I was sitting in College Counseling,... Read More
Week 8: Continuation of Research
Hello everyone! It’s good to be back after my break! This week I’ve focused on really refining my paper, specifically making the first half of my paper sound cohesive with the latter half since I’ve barely touched the first half of my paper since approximately December. It took quite a while to even really read... Read More

Week 6: Sixth(!) Week of Senior Projects
Welcome back everyone! This week has basically been a continuation of last week, where I’ve been working on analyzing my data in a way that can transfer smoothly into my research paper and final presentation. Week 5: Day in The Life of Week 5 Senior Projects
Hey everyone! This week I wanted to talk more about my findings from my data collection as I'm finally almost done and now starting to move forward with my paper and presentation! Week 4: Data Analysis, Data Analysis, and Data Analysis
Hi everyone! Starting last weekend, I began analyzing my data that I collected over the 2-week period of time. Before any analysis happened, I felt quite upset, to be honest, because I didn’t get to reach my 100 response mark before my deadline. However, once I started actually analyzing my data, I realized that the... Read More
Week 3: pt. 2 – Data collection
Welcome back everyone! This week, I finally started my data analysis for my project! The way that I’ll organize my data is by classifying how each different factor asked in the survey has an effect on the respondent’s self-esteem through the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale, where higher total scores indicate greater self-esteem. Additionally, I’ve also been... Read More
Week 2: Second Week of Senior Projects
Hi everyone! This week, I began collecting the data for my survey! It’s been really interesting to see the different responses that people submitted, especially the part on how each person’s algorithms are wired. That’s actually part of why I wanted to start this project, because I feel like social media is such a vast... Read More
Week 1: POV- First week of Senior Projects
Hi! It’s me again, and I’m here to talk to you all more about my project—what I’ve been doing, what I’m doing right now during this week, and my future plans. Week 0: GRWM – Get Ready With Me!
Hi everyone! My name is Seunghyun—get ready with me for my Senior Project! My senior project is on social media usage and its effects on self-esteem. In this digital age, nearly 1.5 billion monthly users were on just TikTok itself in 2023 (Mansoor, 2024). Thus, social media is insanely prevalent in people’s lives today. It... Read More
