Project Title: Drink If You Dare: Examining the Effects of PFAS Contamination on Marginalized Communities in Arizona. BASIS Advisor: Matt Winter Internship Location: The University of Arizona Onsite Mentor: Dr. Vasiliki Karanikola |
Project Abstract
In a world where environmental injustices often go unnoticed, the contamination of water with PFAS is a reminder of the systemic inequalities that plague society. Per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a group of forever chemicals that have contaminated water sources around the world. PFAS are linked to severe health risks, including cancer, liver damage, and developmental delays, and they remain in the environment for decades, with devastating long-term consequences (Abunada et al.) (Brennan et al, 2021) (Lewis et al., 2015). What makes this situation even more troubling is that these contaminants are disproportionately present in communities already facing economic and social challenges. These populations often live near industrial sites, waste disposal facilities, and military bases, leading to higher levels of contamination in their water sources. (Liddie et al., 2023). These areas often find themselves with minimal access to clean water, healthcare, and other resources, amplifying the health risks associated with PFAS exposure. By examining the geospatial distribution of PFAS in water sources serving marginalized communities, I aim to uncover patterns that reveal a clear link between environmental pollution and the social determinants of health in these areas. In addition to examining the distribution of PFAS, I am working with Assistant Professor Karanikola at the University of Arizona on the development of specialized, reusable sponges designed to remove PFAS from water. My work aims to highlight the need for targeted policies that protect the health of communities most affected by pollution and ensure equitable access to safe, clean water. This project is a step toward advocating for underserved communities and ensuring that environmental justice is at the forefront of the conversation on public health and sustainability.
