Project Title: Knocked Out: Choosing the Right Anesthesia for Surgery BASIS Advisor: Shelby Landa Internship Location: Independent Project Onsite Mentor: Dr. Ginnelle Reis |
Project Abstract
My project takes a deeper dive into the minds of anesthesiologists and what the process and thinking is when it comes to which type of anesthesia people should take before going into surgery. Anesthesia is the use of certain medicine and or drugs to prevent pain during medical procedures and an anesthesiologist is the person who administers said drugs. While preparing for surgery, many people are not worrying about the anesthesia aspect before they go into the procedure which results in them not being aware they can speak up about which anesthesia they prefer. The National Library of Medicine says that 60-92% of patients before surgery are anxious. Anxiety comes from a variety of factors and one of those factors is the type of anesthesia used, as also stated in the same article. The pre-operative anxiety they are experiencing could be lowered if they knew more about the approach anesthesiologists take to arrive at the decision for their operation. Sometimes patients do not have preferences either or their preference cannot be adhered to due to pre-existing medical conditions they may have. This means the anesthesiologist has to take in consideration multiple factors of why they believe this certain anesthesia is best for the operation which is what I will be investigating further in. In doing this research interview with Dr. Ries and on my own, I hope to get a better understanding of the anesthetic practice.
Week 11: The end of the journey!!!
Hey everyone, This is my last blog post for my senior project!!! I finished my research awhile ago and I am only focusing on my presentation and final product. I want to thank everyone who commented on my blogs throughout this whole journey. I know I may not have the most interesting topic to everyone... Read More
Week 10: I can knock you out with gas or a boat paddle… it’s and ‘ether-oar’ situation
Hey everyone, My final product is going smoothly and I am having so much fun making it!! I am also trying to make my final presentation but we'll get more information on that tomorrow. This week I will talk about the different types of regional anesthesia. Axillary Nerve Block- local anesthetic is injected around the nerve... Read More
Week 9: No anesthesia pun this time
Hey guys, I have all my research done so I'm working on my final product but I can still give you guys some information I found. The inhalation of certain gaseous drugs produces an insensibility to pain and this is the method that is most generally used. The agents expert their effect without undergoing change... Read More
Week 8: Post-surgery, memories get foggy, but not erased—just Etch-A-Sketch-ed
Hey guys, I hope school is going well for you! We only have 2 months left!! Anyways, I found an article that discussed what anesthesia that the people in this study preferred. Apparently, "intravenous anesthesia is requested more often by patients than other type of administration. This is because of the rapid, pleasant induction and... Read More
Week 7: I have a joke about anesthesia that’s so deep, it might just put you under.
Hey guys, Hopefully your week is going well! This week I found a study that compared children exposed to anesthesia for common pediatric procedures at varying ages with propensity score-matched children unexposed to surgery and anesthesia. The purpose of the study is to determine the impact of the age at exposure on the risk of... Read More
Week 6: For fishermen, anesthesia brings a-whale of tranquility
Hey guys, I hope you had a good Spring Break! This week I found that patient satisfaction among the secondary outcomes, mean differences of immediate recovery indicators as well as a lower consumption of muscle relaxants were significantly in favor of inhalational anesthetics and associated with a faster respiratory recovery and time to tracheal extubation.... Week 5: Delivering anesthesia puns is like hitting the nerve of humor
Hi guys, Hope you are having a good Spring Break! I am also on Spring Break but I still have to write a blog which I don't mind. I am still doing a lot of research on my own but I found out that pregnant women use anesthesia sometimes if they are required to have... Read More
Week 4: Anesthe-see-ya later, pain!
Hello again guys, This week I'll talk about a study that I found while researching. In patients undergoing hip fracture surgery, an estimated 20% of individuals have a diagnosis of dementia. In the vascular surgery population, dementia was identified as the strongest predictor for postoperative complications, increased hospital expenditures and an independent predictor of increased... Week 3: Anesthesia puns are a gas, but don’t get too carried away!
Hey guys! I have asked some questions to my mentor based on what I've researched and she got back to me so I will be talking about what she said before I say what new research I have found. So, maintenance of anesthesia does depend on the patient's estimated left ventricular function, which is the... Read More
Week 2: Anes-the-sure thing for painless procedures
Hi! Hope you guys are doing well! Last week I began talking about how obesity effects the anesthetic process due to them not being able to tolerate intravenous (injected) barbiturates and they have a difficult time breathing on their own, it is more complicated to access which type of anesthesia to use and varies case... Week 1: I told an anesthesia pun, but they slept right through it
Welcome back to our first official post guys! My first week of research was messaging my mentor and doing my own research online but I found out a ton of information that was extremely interesting and I am excited to share with you. Nonetheless, my mentor did get back to me with some feedback on... Read More
Week 0: A penny for your thoughts, a dose for your dreams
What's up guys, My name is Magdalena but I go by Maggie for short. My senior project is about the components that go into determining which type of anesthesia is used for certain procedures and if there are certain complications that restrain a person from receiving a certain type of anesthesia. If you do not... Read More
